Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse

For My Valentine -The Mickey Quilt

This quilt was a surprise Valentine’s Day gift for my husband, who is a longtime Disney fan. The first time he saw the quilt was when it was hanging in the 2015 St. Andrew Bay Quilters’ Guild Quilt Show on Valentines Day.

He is retired military and runs his own website offering tips on how to save money at Disney for members of the military (militarydisneytips.com).  He often makes weekend trips to Disney to take photos for his website, attend blog conferences or to research info for website content. To keep the quilt a secret from him this past year I only worked on it when he was away on his Disney research trips. 😉

Disney’s Mickey Mouse in the center is a panel that I found online at Fabric.com. I trimmed it to the size I wanted and then from there drew on graph paper a plan for piecing and borders to make it a nice size lap quilt for a tall guy.

I used a Mickey head cookie cutter that I had purchased at Walt Disney World to chalk in the shapes on the borders and then free motion swirls were quilted into the Mickey head shapes. All quilting is hand guided, custom quilting on my Innova quilting machine.

Random Ohio Stars for Will

August 2013

I made this quilt for my son’s Birthday. The pattern is based on Bonnie Hunter’s Random Ohio Stars.
My son is a history buff and I found a fabric with the Declaration of Independence printed on it and decided it was the perfect inspiration for the quilt. There are full panels of the Declaration of Independence pieced into the backing and pieces in a few blocks on the front. He requested a quilt for his bed and I know it will get a lot of use so I decided to keep it simple by quilting meandering loops, swirls, stars and I even managed to stitch his name in one block.
He sent me the photo below after he received it to show me how much his cat Lando loves the quilt. I don’t know what it is about cats, but they love a new quilt!
